Inside the climate change conference in Iraq
ARFADA was proud to take part in the climate change conference in Iraq, held in Erbil and hosted by the NGO Coordination body. The event brought together more than 300 local and international organizations, alongside government institutions from the Kurdistan Region, to discuss one of the country’s most pressing issues: the growing impact of a changing climate on communities, livelihoods and resources (see UN OCHA Iraq).
ARFADA’s role at the conference
During the event, our team introduced ARFADA’s expertise and services across monitoring, evaluation and research, with a focus on our climate-related work in Iraq. We shared how rigorous, independent evidence strengthens climate programming — helping organizations understand what is working, where gaps remain, and how resources can deliver the greatest impact on the ground.
The conference also opened valuable conversations. We connected with representatives from local and international organizations and government institutions, exploring real opportunities for collaboration and partnership on the environmental and climate challenges facing Iraq.
Why evidence matters for climate action in Iraq
Climate response in Iraq is accelerating — but good intentions are not enough. Programs need reliable evidence to show what is working, to hold interventions accountable, and to direct limited resources where they matter most. That is exactly where ARFADA’s work sits: turning complex field realities into measurable, decision-ready evidence.
Iraq is among the countries most exposed to climate change in the region. Rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, water scarcity and desertification are already reshaping agriculture, displacing families, and straining the resources communities depend on. Responding effectively means knowing what works — and that is a question only reliable evidence can answer. Independent monitoring and evaluation help organizations test assumptions, track results, and adapt programs before small problems become large ones.
For ARFADA, gatherings like this one are more than networking. They are where field expertise meets policy and funding — where the people measuring change on the ground connect with the people shaping the response. By bringing rigorous, independent evidence into these conversations, we aim to help ensure that climate action in Iraq is not only ambitious, but accountable and measurable from the start.
Being part of the climate change conference in Iraq reflects our commitment to the issues shaping the region’s future. We look forward to supporting partners and donors with the monitoring, evaluation and research that make climate action measurable and accountable.
